Tailoring a Fine Motor Kit to Your Therapy Needs: Make and Take for Ots

Participants will learn new, creative and fun ways to implement fine motor skills therapy and handwriting interventions in the clinical and school classroom settings. Instruction will focus on adapting common household items with which to work on handwriting interventions, manual dexterity, eye hand coordination, manipulation skills, grasping, utensil skills, strength and endurance. They will engage in discussion of ideas for expanding on existing programs and adapting therapy techniques to a variety of environments.

Therapists will discuss therapy techniques and develop their own make and take fine motor kit to enhance motor skills therapy that aligns with multiple program usage.

Objectives
Participants will:
Learn a variety of adaptations that can be applied to work with fine motor needs.
Learn to use common household objects to work on specific skills.
Make and take a fine motor therapy kit that can be used the next day.

This workshop will provide therapists with foundational information to understand and work with children and adults who have many types of hearing loss, particularly those with unique amplification devices. Emphasis will be given to cochlear implants and to those who have them. In the morning, SLPs and OTs will learn about basic ear anatomy, types and degree of hearing loss, understanding test results, how equipment works, basic maintenance of, and therapeutic needs for classroom, home and community. IIIIn the afternoon, SLPs will learn therapy techniques and activities as well as how to work with teachers and parents in hearing support management and care.

Therapists will discuss therapy techniques and develop their own make and take fine motor kit to enhance motor skills therapy that aligns with multiple program usage.

Objectives
Participants will:
Be able to discuss the various types of hearing loss and be able to read audiograms.
Understand how cochlear implants and other amplification devices work.
Be able to do basic troubleshooting of amplification and assistive listening devices to support the auditory access.
Understand the implications for individuals with hearing loss in the classroom, home, and community environments and how to make appropriate modifications and accommodations.
In addition, SLP Participants will:
Be able to use an audiogram to help determine appropriate speech targets for articulation intervention.
Continuing Education Credit:
6.0 hours for SLP
3.6 hours for OT
